Asphalt II – Course Description schedule December 7th, 2026 Boise

Asphalt II provides foundational knowledge of asphalt materials and develops competency in quality control testing procedures required for the WAQTC Transportation Technician Qualification Program (TTQP).

Participants will review Quality Assurance (QA) concepts, measurements and calculations, highway materials terminology, safety considerations, random sampling techniques, and the fundamentals of asphalt materials. Lecture and hands-on training in standardized WAQTC Field Operating Procedures (FOPs), including:

1. AASHTO R 97 – Sampling Asphalt Mixtures
2. AASHTO R 47 – Reducing Samples to Testing Size
3. AASHTO T 329 – Moisture Content (Oven Method)
4. AASHTO T 308 – Asphalt Binder Content (Ignition Method)
5. AASHTO T 209 – Theoretical Maximum Specific Gravity (Gmm)
6. AASHTO T 166 – Bulk Specific Gravity (Gmb)
7. AASHTO R 66 – Sampling Asphalt Materials
8. AASHTO T 30 – Mechanical Analysis of Extracted Aggregate
9. AASHTO T 312 – Superpave Gyratory Compaction
10. WAQTC TM 13 – Volumetric Properties of Asphalt Mixtures

Participants will have the opportunity to complete both a written and practical examination for WAQTC certification.
